Lion One Metals operates the Tuvatu gold project in Fiji within the Mineral Resources sector. The company runs mining operations that require strong health, safety, environment and community (SHEC) standards across its workforce.

About the role

The Health and Safety Trainer sits within the Mineral Resources department at the Tuvatu site in Fiji and reports to the Mine Manager, with 10 direct reports. This role is responsible for building and maintaining health and safety standards across mine operations, ensuring both safety goals and operational targets are met. The trainer works to identify hazards, embed safe practices, and support a strong SHEC culture across the site. The role also involves close working relationships with internal mine operations teams as well as external parties such as the Fiji Government, local communities, traditional land holders, and consultants.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop safety policies, procedures and systems based on best practice to meet high industry standards
  • Support safety goals while ensuring operational targets are met
  • Maintain awareness of safety regulations amongst all employees
  • Identify major hazard areas in the mine and develop and implement risk management strategies
  • Develop and implement a change management strategy and program
  • Promote awareness of SHEC practices and embed a safety culture across the site
  • Demonstrate leadership in SHEC through personal behaviours and conversations
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Mine Manager

About the successful candidate

  • Minimum of 5 years industry experience as a Health and Safety Trainer
  • University degree in resource management or equivalent
  • Current knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act for Canada
  • Experience operating twin boom Jumbos and understanding of heavy-duty machinery
  • Ability to read and understand drilling instruction sheets to complete shift reports
  • Strong commitment to workplace health and safety with good practical understanding of health and safety standards
  • Ability to schedule and prioritise tasks, with a positive, can-do attitude
  • Physically fit and proficient with hand tools
