References in Fiji: Who to Ask and How
6 min read

References in Fiji are practical. Employers want to know whether you turned up, followed instructions, treated people well, handled pressure, and told the truth on your CV. A good referee makes those points easy to confirm.
When applying for Jobs in Fiji, do not treat referees as a last-minute line at the bottom of the page. Some Fiji application forms ask for two professional referees. Others ask for three work referees and say they should not be relatives or personal contacts. Read the ad before you send.
The best referee is usually someone who supervised your work directly: manager, shift leader, head chef, executive housekeeper, foreman, finance manager, office manager, HR officer, teacher from an attachment, or coordinator from a volunteer role. They do not need a fancy title if they can describe your work clearly.
Avoid listing cousins, friends, church members, or neighbours unless the form specifically asks for a character reference and you do not yet have work history. Fiji networks matter, but an employer checking a job application usually needs work evidence, not only that you are a good person.
Ask permission before listing anyone. A surprised referee may ignore the call, give a rushed answer, or say they do not remember your dates. A prepared referee can say: Yes, she worked under me from March to August, handled front desk calls, was punctual, and left when the contract ended.
Use a simple request. You can say: I am applying for admin and customer service roles. Would you be comfortable being a professional referee for me? Employers may call or email you to ask about my attendance, duties, and conduct. I can send my CV so the dates are clear.
Send each referee the role types you are targeting. If you are applying for Hospitality Jobs in Fiji, tell them whether the roles are housekeeping, F&B, kitchen, or front office. If you are applying for office jobs, tell them whether the focus is accounts, reception, filing, or project support. That helps them answer with relevant examples.
List referee details neatly: full name, job title, organisation, phone number, email, and relationship to you. Example: Mere T., Restaurant Supervisor, ABC Resort, 999 0000, mere@example.com, former shift supervisor. Check spelling and phone numbers before every application.
If a referee prefers certain times, handle it professionally. You can write Available by phone after 3pm, if the form allows notes. Do not write personal comments such as She is busy with family or He does not answer unknown numbers. Keep it businesslike.
Do not list a referee from a workplace where you left badly if you have a better option. Choose someone who can be fair and specific: another supervisor, senior colleague, trainer, or HR officer. If you must list that employer because the form asks for immediate supervisor, be honest and prepare for the question.
If you are new to work, build referees from attachments, training, volunteering, sports, church administration, youth groups, or school responsibilities. The referee should have seen you complete tasks. A teacher who supervised attendance, group work, or a project can be stronger than a family friend.
Before and after examples make your CV stronger. Weak: Referees available on request. Better: Referees: 2 professional referees available, including former housekeeping supervisor and training coordinator. Best, where the form allows: list the names, titles, phone numbers, emails, and relationship clearly.
Government and technical roles may ask for more formal checks. Fiji public-sector application guidance can require a current CV with referee details, certified qualifications, and, for selected candidates, police clearance and medical certificates before starting. Do not order every document too early unless the employer asks, but know that checks may come later.
For private employers, reference checks may be less formal but still serious. A hotel manager may call after a trial shift. A finance manager may check accuracy and trustworthiness before an offer. A foreman may ask whether you worked safely and listened on site.
Protect your referees' privacy. Do not post their phone numbers publicly or include them in documents that will be shared widely. If you are uploading through an employer form, follow the form. If you are emailing a CV, send only to the employer contact listed in the ad.
Tell referees after you apply, not after the employer has already called. A short message is enough: Bula, I applied for a Finance Assistant role in Suva today and listed you as a referee. They may call this week. I attached the CV I sent. Vinaka for helping.
Keep referees fresh. If a number changes, update your CV. If a referee moves to another organisation, update their title. If someone stops replying, replace them. Silent phones can slow an application even when the employer likes your CV.
A strong referee can support a short contract, a career break, or a move from one sector to another. Ask them to speak about behaviours that transfer: punctuality, honesty, accuracy, teamwork, care with customers, safety habits, and ability to learn. Those are useful across Fiji Jobs in hotels, shops, offices, sites, and services.
Once your referees are ready, search FijiCareers for Jobs in Fiji that fit your skills, open the employer link, and follow the application instructions. Reply quickly if the employer says they will check references, then let your referees know so everyone is prepared.
