IT Jobs in Fiji: Support Roles That Hire
6 min read

Not every IT job is a software development job. In Fiji, many entry and early-career roles are support roles: help desk officer, IT technician, desktop support, systems support assistant, field technician, network support, hotel IT assistant, or junior service desk analyst.
The demand signal is real. The 2025 National Skills Gap Assessment Survey listed IT Technician as the second largest identified skills loss, at 6.0 percent, behind chefs and ahead of accountants and electricians. Employers also reported wider gaps across technical and support roles. That makes support experience valuable, even when you are not yet a specialist.
Support work is about keeping other people working. You may reset passwords, set up laptops, install approved software, replace keyboards, check printers, connect projectors, support Microsoft 365 accounts, troubleshoot Wi-Fi, record tickets, prepare phones, help with backups, or visit branches and properties when something breaks.
Hotels, banks, retail groups, schools, government-linked offices, NGOs, shipping companies, clinics, call centres, and small businesses all need this work. Resort IT can include point-of-sale systems, booking systems, guest Wi-Fi, staff devices, CCTV coordination, and after-hours updates. Corporate office support may focus more on laptops, accounts, printers, shared drives, and meeting rooms.
The first skill is calm communication. A staff member with a broken printer or locked account is usually worried about their own deadline. A good support person asks clear questions, repeats the issue back, explains the next step, and avoids making the user feel silly. Employers remember technicians who solve the problem without creating tension.
The second skill is method. Do not click randomly. Check the basics first: power, cable, account status, network, recent changes, error message, affected users, and whether the problem is one device or many. Write down what you tried. If you need to escalate, a senior technician should be able to see your steps.
Your CV should show tools and incidents, not just buzzwords. Weak: good with computers. Stronger: supported Windows laptops, reset Microsoft 365 passwords, installed approved applications, replaced faulty peripherals, logged requests in a ticket sheet, and escalated network outages to the senior technician. If you know Active Directory basics, Microsoft 365 admin, router setup, printer configuration, imaging, antivirus tools, or a ticketing platform, list only what you can explain.
Certificates can help, but they do not replace proof. A diploma, degree, FNU or USP study, vendor course, CompTIA-style preparation, internship, attachment, or home lab can all support your case. The key is to connect learning to practical examples: built a small network at home, repaired family laptops, supported a school lab, helped a shop set up email, or documented common fixes during attachment.
Cybersecurity basics matter even in junior jobs. Never ask users to share passwords. Do not copy company files to personal drives. Do not install unapproved software because someone is in a hurry. Lock screens when leaving a device. If you handle ID documents, payroll files, guest details, or customer records, follow the employer's privacy process.
Prepare an interview story with the structure: what broke, what you checked, what you tried, when you escalated, and how you confirmed the fix. For example: A staff member could not access email. I checked internet access, confirmed the issue affected only one account, reset the password through the approved process, helped the user sign in, and reminded them to update the password on their phone.
Also prepare a story where you did not know the answer. Good support teams do not expect juniors to know everything. They expect honesty. You can say: I checked the basics, documented the error, told the user I needed to escalate, and gave the senior technician the device name, screenshot, time, and steps already tried.
Ask about the roster before accepting. Some IT Jobs in Fiji are normal weekday office roles. Others involve evening maintenance, weekend support, on-call phones, branch visits, or resort coverage across properties. Clarify transport, overtime or time-off process, phone allowance if relevant, and whether travel is occasional or regular.
For field roles, practical readiness helps. Keep a small notebook, pen, charger, USB drive if allowed by policy, basic toolkit if required, and a clean way to label equipment. Follow the employer's rules on removable media because many organisations will not allow personal USB use.
Do not ignore soft skills. The best support technicians build trust with reception, finance, HR, operations, housekeeping, teachers, nurses, or managers because they treat every ticket as part of someone else's workday. A polite update saying I am still checking this and will return by 2pm can reduce frustration.
If you are starting from scratch, build a portfolio that does not expose private data. Keep notes on practice tasks: installed Windows, set up a router, created a spreadsheet tracker for tickets, wrote a simple troubleshooting checklist, cleaned malware from a personal device, or helped a community office organise backups. Do not publish passwords, screenshots with names, or company details.
