Teaching work is public-facing, regulated, and closely tied to community trust. Before you apply for a school role, make sure your documents, registration status, subject evidence, and referees can all support the same message: you are ready to teach safely, clearly, and consistently.

Prepare a small teaching portfolio, even if the ad does not ask for one. Keep it simple and privacy-safe: lesson plan samples, assessment rubrics, photos of classroom displays without student faces, redacted feedback examples, certificates from workshops, and a one-page teaching philosophy.

Interviews may ask how you handle late homework, disruptive students, mixed language confidence, absenteeism, bullying, exam pressure, or a parent who is unhappy with marks. If asked to do a micro teach, keep the lesson tight. State the learning objective, check prior knowledge, model one example, let students practise, ask two or three questions, and close by checking whether the objective was met. A short lesson with structure is better than a long speech.

New teachers should prepare for questions about professional boundaries. Schools expect warmth, but also judgement. Do not message students casually, post student images without approval, discuss family issues publicly, or handle discipline alone when policy requires a senior teacher.

If you are returning to teaching after time away, explain how you have kept current. Mention curriculum familiarity, relief teaching, tutoring, church or community teaching, online courses, workshops, or recent classroom observation. The employer needs to see readiness, not only past service.

If you are a graduate, use practicum evidence strongly. Name the year levels, subjects, class sizes if appropriate, lesson topics, assessment tasks, and feedback from your supervising teacher. A short honest practicum example is stronger than a broad claim that you love children.

If the vacancy names a curriculum area, read it again before writing your cover letter. A school looking for mathematics support, early literacy, computer studies, or vocational training wants proof that you understand that learning need, not only that you are generally available.

Rural, maritime, and remote postings need honest thought. Ask about accommodation, transport, reporting line, internet access for lesson preparation, and how resources are supplied. Do not reject a non-Suva posting automatically, but do not accept blindly either.

Private schools may move faster than government processes, but they still check registration, qualifications, discipline history, and referees. Be ready with scanned documents and originals if invited to verify them.
