What Legitimate Hotel Hiring Usually Looks Like
7 min read

Legitimate hotel hiring is usually clear before it is exciting. The ad names the property or group, the department, the role, the location, the employment type, and the application method. It may not answer every question, but it gives you enough to decide whether the job is real and whether you are a possible fit.
Hotel Jobs in Fiji matter because tourism is one of the country's biggest employers. FHTA has described tourism as supporting more than 118,000 direct and indirect jobs, roughly one in four Fijians. At the same time, Fiji's skills gap reporting has identified chefs, technical workers, accountants, electricians, admin staff, and drivers among roles employers struggle to keep. That demand creates opportunity, but it also attracts people who copy hotel language to make fake offers sound believable.
A normal hotel ad starts with the basics. It says front office, housekeeping, food and beverage, kitchen, engineering, spa, security, marine, reservations, finance, HR, or management. It tells you whether the role is in Suva, Nadi, Denarau, Coral Coast, Mamanucas, Yasawas, Savusavu, or another location. For island roles, it should explain whether the position is live-in, rostered, or based on transfers.
The application path should connect to the hotel. Some properties use global careers portals. Some use a local HR email. Some ask for a CV, cover letter, certificates, references, and a short questionnaire. For example, established hotel career pages commonly explain that candidates search by Fiji, choose a role, complete an application form, upload documents, agree to a privacy statement, and submit. That is very different from sending cash to a private person to be considered.
After application, HR or a department manager may screen candidates. A phone screen can be short: Are you available for the roster? Can you reach the property? Do you have customer service experience? Do you have kitchen, housekeeping, driving, licence, or trade skills? Are your referee details current? A short screen is normal. A demand for payment before screening is not.
Interviews are usually tied to the property or a professional venue. For Hospitality Jobs in Fiji, presentation and attitude matter, so the employer may notice grooming, punctuality, confidence, and how you speak about guests. Department managers may ask practical questions: how you handle complaints, clean to standard, manage a busy breakfast service, follow hygiene rules, or work under pressure without arguing.
Some hotel roles involve tests or trial assessments. A chef may be asked about knife skills, hygiene, stock control, or cooking methods. A front office candidate may discuss booking systems and guest complaints. A housekeeper may be asked about room standards and speed. A marine or driver role may require licences. A fair assessment has a supervisor, a time limit, and a clear link to the role. It should not become free labour for a whole roster with no explanation.
Document checks usually come after interest is serious. Resorts may ask for references, certificates, police clearance, medical fitness, licences, or proof of professional registration, depending on the role. A resort nurse, marine captain, driver, security role, or role with staff and guest safety may need stronger checks than an entry-level runner. The timing should make sense: the employer explains why the document is needed and where it will be stored.
Pay and conditions should be discussed plainly. The employer may not publish every pay detail in the ad, but before you accept, ask about hourly or salary basis, roster, days off, meal arrangements, uniforms, staff transport, staff housing, probation, overtime process, and payslips. Fiji's national minimum wage has moved in recent years, with public reporting placing it at FJD 5.00 per hour from April 2025, but workers should always check the latest Wages Regulation Order and ask HR how pay applies to their role.
Island roles need extra questions. Ask where you sleep, whether meals are provided, how days off work, how boat transfers are organised, what happens in bad weather, and who to contact in an emergency. A real resort understands these questions. Staff housing and transport are not small details when you are leaving home for a roster.
Watch out for offers that sound too smooth. "No experience, huge pay, start tomorrow, pay fee tonight" does not match normal hotel HR. Neither does an offer that refuses to name the property until after payment. A real hotel wants reliable staff, but it still protects its brand, guests, and team by checking people properly.
If you are new to hotel work, focus on fit rather than magic words. For housekeeping, show speed, honesty, stamina, and attention to detail. For F&B, show guest manners, clean presentation, and comfort on your feet. For kitchen roles, show hygiene, learning attitude, and any training. For front office, show communication, calmness, and basic computer confidence. Chef Jobs in Fiji may be competitive, but the skills gap means steady learners can build a path.
Use the interview to check them too. Ask, "Who will supervise me?" "What training is provided?" "What documents are needed after shortlisting?" "What is the roster?" "When will candidates hear back?" Good HR teams may be busy, but they can answer the main points without making you feel foolish for asking.
The safest way to start is through a named listing and official apply path. Browse Hotel Jobs in Fiji on FijiCareers, read the employer details, and apply through the property or group link. A legitimate hotel process may still be competitive, but it should never begin with secrecy, panic, or a private fee.
