About the company
Vuvale Outsourcing supports Australian clients with professional services delivered from Fiji. Its client for this role is an Australian consumer lending business specialising in small to medium unsecured personal loans, and it is building a new underwriting team focused on quality, consistency and accountability.
About the role
This is a permanent, full-time Underwriter role in the Consumer Lending department, based onsite in Nabua, Suva City, working Monday to Friday on Australian business hours (with transport home provided for evening shifts). The underwriter assesses unsecured personal loan applications for small to medium amounts, reviewing income, expenses, bank statements, repayment capacity, credit behaviour and loan purpose. The role applies responsible lending principles and Australian consumer credit obligations to make timely, evidence-based decisions within delegated authority, while screening for red flags such as affordability concerns, hardship indicators, vulnerability and inconsistent information. It involves direct customer contact by phone and email during the assessment process, and close collaboration with customer service, compliance, operations and management teams. As the underwriting function grows, the role also contributes to process improvement, workflow development, quality assurance and team capability, including onboarding and coaching support.
Key responsibilities
- Assess unsecured consumer loan applications for small to medium personal loans, including review of income, expenses, bank statements, repayment capacity, credit behaviour and loan purpose.
- Apply responsible lending principles to determine whether a loan is suitable, affordable and consistent with the customer's requirements and objectives.
- Conduct customer verification checks, including identity, employment, income, bank account ownership and supporting documentation, in line with internal procedures.
- Review applications for potential red flags, including affordability concerns, hardship indicators, vulnerability, repeat borrowing, dishonored payments, gambling activity, account conduct issues and inconsistencies in customer information.
- Make sound lending recommendations or decisions within delegated authority and refer applications for further review where required.
- Maintain clear, accurate and compliant file notes to support assessment outcomes, decisions and customer conversations.
- Communicate with customers by phone and email to request information, clarify application details, explain next steps and provide professional service throughout the assessment process.
- Work closely with customer service, compliance, operations and management teams to resolve assessment queries and ensure applications are progressed efficiently.
About the successful candidate
- Minimum 2 years' experience in underwriting, credit assessment, loan processing or a similar role with an Australian lender.
- Experience assessing unsecured consumer lending, personal loans, small amount credit contracts, medium amount credit contracts or similar regulated credit products is highly desirable.
- Sound understanding of responsible lending, customer verification, affordability, lending suitability and Australian consumer credit obligations.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret bank statements, income information, customer circumstances and supporting documents.
- High attention to detail, practical credit judgement and confidence making consistent, evidence-based decisions within policy and delegated authority.
- Clear verbal and written communication, with a calm, professional and respectful approach to customers.
- A strong compliance mindset, including fair customer treatment, privacy, data security, accurate records and audit-ready documentation.
- Organisation, resilience and a positive team approach, with the ability to manage competing priorities and share knowledge without compromising quality.
