Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) is Fiji's national electricity utility, responsible for generating and supplying power across the country. EFL is expanding into solar and hybrid renewable energy projects as part of its special projects portfolio.
About the role
This Graduate Engineer position is based at EFL's Navutu Depot in the Western Division and reports to the Manager Solar Development. The role supports the identification, assessment and development of utility-scale, distributed and hybrid solar energy projects from concept through to commissioning. The graduate will assist with site assessments, concept designs, engineering calculations, grid-connection reviews, procurement documentation and project planning under supervision. Duties also include coordinating with internal teams, government agencies, landowners and contractors, monitoring construction quality, and supporting commissioning and performance monitoring of solar assets. The role requires travel to EFL sites throughout Fiji and may involve remaining away from the base station for project activities.
Key responsibilities
- Assist with identification, assessment and development of utility-scale, distributed and hybrid solar energy projects from concept through commissioning
- Support preliminary site assessments covering solar resource, land availability, access, topography, drainage, geotechnical constraints, grid proximity and environmental considerations
- Assist in preparing concept designs, layouts, technical specifications and design reviews for photovoltaic systems, balance-of-system equipment, energy storage interfaces and associated civil and electrical works
- Undertake engineering calculations and technical analyses under supervision, including energy-yield estimates, equipment sizing, cable and protection considerations, losses and performance assumptions
- Support grid-connection assessments and coordinate technical inputs with relevant EFL teams to ensure compliance with network, safety and operational requirements
- Prepare scopes of work, bills of quantities, cost estimates, tender documentation and technical evaluation inputs for procurement
- Monitor construction activities and verify workmanship, materials, quantities and progress against approved drawings, specifications, contracts and programmes
- Assist with inspections, quality assurance, testing, commissioning, defect rectification, handover and close-out of solar projects
About the successful candidate
- A bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Renewable Energy Engineering from a recognized university
- Sound understanding of fundamental engineering principles and demonstrated interest in solar photovoltaic systems, renewable energy development and power systems
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, layouts, specifications, technical data and relevant standards, and prepare clear calculations and technical reports under supervision
- Competence in standard office applications; exposure to engineering design, drafting, geographic information, solar modelling or project-scheduling software is an advantage
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, planning and organisational skills with attention to accuracy, safety, quality and timely delivery
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and diverse stakeholders
- Membership of, or eligibility for graduate membership with, a recognised professional engineering body
- Ability and willingness to undertake fieldwork, travel throughout Fiji, remain away from base station when required, and hold a valid non-provisional driving licence
