About the role

The Network Support Technician sits within the Department of Network Systems Security under the Division of Information Technology Services, and is responsible for operations and service delivery relating to network infrastructure and core devices across the University. The role covers end-to-end network monitoring from the telecommunications network provider through to the University and all campuses internally, spanning campus LAN, WAN implementations, secure Wi-Fi infrastructure, point-to-point access, and user onboarding to the network. The incumbent also provides support for users and assigned applications and information systems, including configuring security and maintaining, supporting, and optimising network racks and cabling. Additional duties include supporting solution design, surveys, and material listing, translating requirements into workable technical solutions, and supporting evaluation of third-party vendors as directed. Proper documentation practices must be maintained throughout.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage end-to-end network monitoring from the telecommunications provider to the University and all campuses
  • Support campus LAN, WAN implementations, secure Wi-Fi infrastructure, and point-to-point access
  • Handle user onboarding to the network
  • Provide support for users and assigned applications and information systems, including configuring security
  • Maintain, support, and optimise new and existing network racks, cabling, and rack labelling to industry standard
  • Support solution design, surveys, and material listing
  • Research and translate requirements into workable technical solutions
  • Support evaluation of third-party vendors as directed and ensure proper documentation is maintained

About the successful candidate

  • Bachelor's degree in an IT-related field (Computer Science, Information Systems, Cyber Security, or Information Technology) with 2 years' experience in the IT sector, including at least 1 year managing OSI model Layer 2-3 and enterprise-level Wi-Fi infrastructure, OR a Diploma in an IT-related field with 3 years' experience meeting the same OSI/Wi-Fi requirement
  • Valid CompTIA N+ or CCNA R&S certification
  • Industry-level structured cabling copper/fibre cable certification
  • Experience in Cisco CLI, Windows Server OS, Solarwinds, and PRTG
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Prior knowledge of documentation practices
  • Desirable: certification by reputable IT vendors, experience managing IT assets, understanding of Windows Servers, and Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) certification
