About the role

This re-advertised vacancy (Ref: AC 120/26) covers two possible academic levels, Associate Professor or Assistant Professor, within the Department of Surgery, Anaesthesia & Women's Health, College of Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences. An Associate Professor is expected to hold a national and often international profile, chair sessions or give talks at academic conferences, maintain a significant research and scholarship record, link research to teaching, and supervise thesis graduate students, while showing significant academic leadership. An Assistant Professor is expected to be developing their own research and teaching interests, becoming known nationally for their work, contributing to curriculum development, publishing regularly in peer-reviewed journals, and beginning to show academic leadership alongside administrative duties at Department or School level. Applicants must address each Person Specification criterion in a letter of application, which forms the main basis for shortlisting, and submit a detailed CV with three referees' contact details, academic transcripts, and relevant certificates.

Key responsibilities

  • Associate Professor: chair sessions or give talks at academic conferences in Fiji and overseas
  • Associate Professor: maintain a significant research/scholarship record and link research to teaching, developing new papers and courses
  • Associate Professor: supervise thesis graduate students and show significant academic leadership
  • Assistant Professor: contribute effectively to curriculum development
  • Assistant Professor: publish regularly in peer-reviewed international journals or other appropriate outlets
  • Assistant Professor: chair or take part in organising committees of academic conferences or disciplinary meetings
  • Assistant Professor: begin showing academic leadership and take part in administrative duties at Department/School level

About the successful candidate

  • Associate Professor: Master's with specialist registration and 7 or more years of post-registration working experience
  • Associate Professor: demonstrated evidence of good teaching performance, university service, community service and leadership
  • Associate Professor: clear evidence of Master's/PhD supervision and examination, and a record of regional and/or international contributions
  • Associate Professor: demonstrated evidence of undertaking consultancies and industrial or clinical experience in the area of expertise
  • Assistant Professor: MBBS plus Master's with specialist registration, either more than 5 years work experience or less than 5 years
  • Assistant Professor: demonstrated evidence in learning and teaching with potential to become an effective teacher
  • Assistant Professor: industrial/clinical experience and demonstrated consultancy evidence in the area of expertise
  • Assistant Professor: evidence of meeting at least one of University Service, Community Service, or Academic Leadership and collegiality

Associate Professor: FJD 146,443.00 gross per annum plus superannuation; Assistant Professor: FJD 134,027.00 - 136,343.00 gross per annum plus superannuation
