About the role

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation) is a strategic leadership position responsible for developing and implementing the University's strategic research, innovation, and knowledge transfer agenda in line with the FNU Strategic Plan. The post-holder leads the University's research programme, building an institutional research culture centred on challenge-based research with demonstrable impact, alongside learning and teaching. The role leads efforts to secure partnerships with universities, governments, NGOs, employers and funders, and develops and implements research policies to improve research quality, innovation, and knowledge exchange. It also involves implementing improvements identified through the University's external and internal audit processes. The post-holder sits on the Senior Leadership Team and Senate, works closely with College Associate Deans for Research and the Professoriate, chairs the University Research Committee and the Centre for Graduate Studies, and may occasionally deputise for the Vice-Chancellor.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement the University's strategic research, innovation, and knowledge transfer plans in line with the FNU Strategic Plan.
• Implement recommendations for improvement identified through external and internal audit processes.
• Lead the university's research programme and build an institutional research culture valuing challenge-based, impactful research.
• Lead development of partnerships with universities, governments, NGOs, employers and funders.
• Develop and implement research policies to improve research quality, innovation, and knowledge exchange activities.
• Lead and support enhanced bidding for and winning of research grants.
• Oversee the Fiji Institute of Pacific Health Research (FIPHR) and other emerging research centres associated with the colleges.
• Chair the University Research Committee and the Centre for Graduate Studies, and other committees or working groups as agreed with the Vice-Chancellor.

About the successful candidate

• An earned doctorate (PhD or equivalent) from a recognised university.
• Professorial or equivalent standing, with a research reputation and profile commensurate with a senior academic leadership role.
• More than 15-20 years' experience in higher education with significant experience leading, managing and administering institution-wide research portfolios.
• Evidence of sustained success in attracting competitive external research funding.
• Demonstrated leadership in research quality enhancement, external evaluation, and research governance.
• Strong financial, human resources, and organisational management skills.
• Membership of relevant learned and/or professional societies would be an advantage (desirable).
• Experience establishing or leading research centres, institutes, or interdisciplinary research initiatives (desirable).
