About the company

The Pacific Community (SPC) is the principal scientific and technical organisation in the Pacific region, supporting development since 1947. It is an international development organisation owned and governed by 27 country and territory members, working across more than 25 sectors. SPC is known for its knowledge and innovation in areas such as fisheries science, public health, geoscience, and conservation of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture. Within SPC, the Human Rights and Social Development Division (HRSD) works to advance human rights, equality and social inclusion for Pacific people, grounded in cultural values.

About the role

The Communications Adviser – Pacific Women Lead will oversee the coordination and implementation of strategic communications, engagement and outreach plans for the programme, and coordinate visibility communications through high-quality, multi-media communication and media products for a wide range of stakeholders. The role has matrix reporting and working relationships with others in the Division, as it may require working across the objectives of other HRSD work programmes and broader SPC delivery. Responsibilities span four areas: visibility and strategic communications, communications for development design and outreach, people management and capacity building, and a One-SPC approach to integrated gender equality communications. This includes developing and managing communication workplans and MEL for SPC's gender equality flagship, producing media statements, stories, Op Eds and publications, managing a team including leave approvals and performance appraisals, and conducting communications training for the HRSD team and external partners. The role also co-leads SPC communications coordination for the PPA convening, including the Triennial Conference of Pacific Women and the Pacific Ministers for Women Meeting. The position is funded until 31 December 2027, subject to renewal depending on funding and performance.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and implement communication workplans and strategies, including monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL), for SPC's gender equality flagship and outcome area
  • Manage and monitor delivery of workplans, leading development of high-quality, innovative communications and knowledge products
  • Ensure visibility of the gender equality outcome area through media statements, stories, Op Eds, publications and other public resources
  • Identify opportunities to engage and promote the gender equality outcome area to existing and new audiences, including senior-level partners
  • Develop targeted engagement and outreach strategies to engage key partners, SPC member countries' government and NGO stakeholders, and grantees
  • Oversee communications reporting for organizational, donor and other reports, working with MEL for high-quality presentation and content
  • Manage and report on delivery of SPC's gender equality communication plans, including leave approvals, management plans and performance appraisals of the team
  • Conduct inward-facing communication training for the SPC HRSD team, and extend training to external partners where practical

About the successful candidate

  • At least 7 years of strategic communications and visibility-related experience, preferably in the Pacific region
  • Experience managing development and design of print, online and multi-media communications materials for a range of audiences, to tight deadlines
  • Ability to translate text-heavy documents or information into user-friendly visual materials
  • Excellent interpersonal and representational skills, with experience building and maintaining effective working relationships with diverse individuals and organisations
  • Demonstrated understanding of Pacific cultural values, gender equality concepts, human rights, good governance and development challenges in the region
  • Excellent English communication skills, both oral and written
  • Ability to work in a multicultural, inclusive and equitable environment
