The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) is the statutory body responsible for border and post-border biosecurity operations in Fiji. It oversees monitoring, surveillance, and awareness activities to protect the country from biosecurity risks under governing legislation.
About the role
This role is responsible for conducting border, post-border, monitoring, surveillance, and awareness activities on behalf of BAF. The Biosecurity Officer reports to either the Shift Supervisor, Station Coordinator, or Station Officer, depending on placement, and implements operational strategies set by these supervisors in consultation with the National Manager Operations. The incumbent provides timely inspectional reports to their immediate supervisor and carries out duties required under the legislation governing BAF. The role involves hands-on inspection, clearance, and enforcement work across aircraft, vessels, cargo, mail, and passengers, both for international and domestic biosecurity requirements.
Key responsibilities
- Board aircraft/vessel and review documentation
- Undertake aircraft/vessel inspection and ensure safe disposal of all refuse
- Undertake cargo hole inspection and supervise cargo discharge
- Disinfect aircraft/vessel if required and screen manifests to determine regulated items
- Supervise and monitor biosecurity-regulated articles in transit
- Conduct passenger profiling, baggage screening, inspection, and clearance
- Ensure import requirements are met before tailgate inspection and release of regulated cargo to approved premises
- Take appropriate action on biosecurity risk items intercepted during inspection or surveillance, including determining whether to penalise, prosecute, or further investigate non-compliance
About the successful candidate
- Diploma in Agriculture or a related field with 2 years of relevant work experience
- A Bachelor's degree in Agriculture or a related field is an added advantage
- Driving licence is an added advantage
- Ability to work as part of a team in a changing environment
- Experience in biosecurity services is an added advantage
- Consistently good customer service and ability to work under minimal supervision
- Ability to perform effectively in rural situations
- Experience and knowledge in identifying potential biosecurity risks and issues
