The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji is the government body responsible for protecting Fiji from pests, diseases and biosecurity risks. It manages control and surveillance operations across the country, including programs targeting invasive species such as the Asian Subterranean Termite (AST).
About the role
This role sits within the AST Control and Surveillance operations and reports to the Station Officer Termites. The Assistant Biosecurity Officer carries out and assists with control, surveillance, treatment and containment of Asian Subterranean Termite infestations across Fiji, including Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Labasa and Suva. The work covers site inspections, bait box installation, chemical treatment, monitoring, and record-keeping, along with community awareness activities. The officer also assists with driving the team to field locations and undertakes administrative tasks as required.
Key responsibilities
- Receive and register termite complaints and attend to residential and non-residential sites
- Carry out surveillance, inspections and treatment of AST infestations, including bait box installation and tree/timber yard inspection
- Drill AST-infected trees, flush chemicals, and record GPS coordinates for sites visited
- Conduct community awareness sessions and distribute educational materials on AST risks
- Monitor and follow up on infested sites and bait boxes, and treat any re-infestations
- Inspect and certify termite host materials, sugar cane fields, and turf/soil for transfer out of declared zones
- Install and collect sticky traps, and collect termite specimens for laboratory identification
- Participate in team planning meetings, complete required forms accurately, and assist with driving the team to field activities
About the successful candidate
- At least 1 year of field experience in natural resource or agricultural management
- Relevant field operations experience, such as a background as a serviceman, policeman, or in the military, is advantageous
- Physically fit and comfortable working outdoors in physically demanding conditions
- Highly committed to eradicating AST from Fiji
- Familiarity with animal handling or willingness to learn
- Able to work effectively both independently and collaboratively, with good communication and community engagement skills
- Good customer service skills, willing to work in teams and long hours as needed
- Organized, well presented, and holds a Group 2 Manual Driving Licence; a valid driving license is an added advantage
